A suspended concrete carpark deck in Adelaide exhibited early plastic shrinkage cracking which required the application of a Xypex coating system to provide and sustain durability.

The suspended deck is a composite steel/concrete system that uses primary and secondary steel beams fitted with steel studs to connect concrete that is located over permanent, ribbed, galvanised steel form work.

Xypex Concentrate was specified and selected as the most suitable product to be applied as a protective coating. When mixed with water, this light grey powder is applied as a cementitious slurry coat to above ground or below ground concrete. Xypex prevents the penetration of water and other liquids from any direction by causing a catalytic reaction that produces a non-soluble crystalline formation within the pores and capillary tracts of the concrete.

The repair methodology required the concrete slab to be surface-cleaned free of laitance, dirt and foreign materials and surface saturated to provide an open capillary system for the application of Xypex Concentrate.

Xypex Concentrate was brush applied and the surface treated with Xypex Gamma Cure to accelerate the crystalline process and retain moisture within the substrate. The protective coating was successfully completed according to specification.

The application of Xypex products will ensure long-term protection of steel reinforcing in the concrete slab and extend the life of the car park deck.
